College Station, TX: Kiddies and Kitties

One Love of Texas A&M to host a carnival where families from the Bryan/College Station area can come together to enhance community bonding. All the carnival's proceeds would go to benefit the Brazos Valley Animal Shelter improve their cat facility and provide overall better care for their animals.

The Specifics

One Love is a student run service organization at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. One Love’s goal is to help people weave a common thread of love throughout all aspects of their life. Funds from this challenge would go to building and renting carnival games as well as advertising and refreshments. Games would be free, admittance to the carnival would be a simple donation of any amount, which would go to the shelter. Families would get to spend the evening playing together, meeting the animals and even getting the chance to adopt if desired. After nightfall, families can lay out on blanket to enjoy a screening of a cat themed movie while eating fresh cookies and milk!

Cats? Really? Of all the challenges facing the USA, this is the best you could come up with? I guess the sad part about it is that your idea is in first place above other far better ideas that actually help people.

Bringing the community together for a good cause is never a bad idea. All of the ideas on here are fantastic and deserve to win, and I wish that were so! But that doesn't give you, or anyone the right to judge or criticize an act of kindness!

This is a link to a very interesting short documentary on the stray dog problem in Detroit. I post this to bring attention to the fact that while it is wonderful to help brothers and sisters in a community, animal shelters should never be completely ignored. They are have a vital function in every community. The really sad part about your comment is how judgmental it is. Being judgmental has caused a lot of problems in our world, including facilitating war and poverty. No good deed should be shot down. The fact that this organization is going out to do something for their community is commendable, especially since so many people don't bother to do anything! In addition, in a society where we have domesticated animals, it is our responsibility to properly care for those animals. This is a worthy idea.

Changing the world starts with you, one step at a time. Having a community that works together is how changes are made for the better. People needs to better understand that this is NOT just our planet, we share it with other living things that deserve to be treated humanely, be it animals or plants or entire ecosystems. This is a great idea that should happen regardless of if it wins or not :)
