The Specifics

Each month, GOOD challenges our community members to do something that will improve the world around us and our own lives. The challenge for September? To connect with other people. In an effort to support this challenge, we want to fund a GOOD meet-up event. Submit your ideas here to apply for $500 to fund your meet-up.

All ideas will be voted on by the community—so be ready to spread the word to your friends.

Interested in connecting with members of your community, neighborhood, office, or school? Come up with a plan—is it a party, a workshop, a volunteer day, or a beer crawl? Who’s invited? And, when is this all going down? You get the idea. Then, submit your idea here. Projects can be submitted with a written description, an image or YouTube video and are accepted from individuals, groups or on behalf of an organization. Once projects are submitted, rally your colleagues and friends to get behind your effort and join the GOOD community in deciding which is most deserving of the cash to make it happen. In addition the for fund, the winner will also receive a Compostable Party Kit for 50 from www.branchhome.com.

Rules & Regulations

  • The GOOD Maker Challenge is open for submissions from September 15th to September 30th.
  • Submitted projects must be able to be activated with $500. Let us know how you’re going to put this money to work!
  • Projects will be featured on this page and public voting will be open from September 30th to October 6th.
  • The project with the most votes will receive $500.
  • Read all the rules.

If anyone in the US would like to host their own AMAZING GRILLED CHEESE GIVEAWAY, we would be happy to support with votes, info, cheerleading and love. It is the best community event this side of a block party crossed with a bike rally crossed with a soup kitchen, but since we are in Canada we are not eligible for the GOOD fund.

Check us out: https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Amazing-Grilled-Cheese-Giveaway-WorldWide/103700803047205

It is our dream that grilled cheeses reach the hands of hungry cyclists and neighbourhood friends EVERYWHERE - please steal our idea!

Okay I didn't see this till after uploading my GOOD idea, Imagine Peace Lives Here, BUT we are the grilled cheese family in our neighborhood so I just wanted to express that your idea is FABULOUS! we do spicy grilled cheese, grilled cheese deluxe (with veggies and fake bacon), gluten free grilled cheese, and dairy free grilled cheese.... and as usual for us, it's what we'll serve at our GOOD EVENT!

The Idea:
A "FishMob" of 20 Remote control flying sharks & clown fish in a moving aquarium gallery of projected images educating participants about local water sustainability. All community education comes from a strength-based perspective about the good news about local water and its preservation.

The Specifics:
A planning committee of half a dozen people researching local water specifics about what is going WELL and RIGHT will create a video combining short well written statements with images of water. The video will then be set up in the event space, which we have a proposal into the local gallery and event space Million Fishes, in San Francisco. If this space is not available we will host this party at the Tech Shop Annex in San Francisco.
The event will result in nautically costumed participants who arrive to "fly" their fishes around the space while the educational video is projected creating a virtual "water". All funds will go to purchase as many flying remote control fish as possible, with each estimated at $40.

I haven't been able to submit my idea through the system. I've been trying for about 48 hours and now there's only 10 minutes left

I am going to organize all the artists, aspiring artists, and those who are inspired by the idea of finding the artist within to do a mural project in my home. As we spend the day together drawing, painting, creating, we can discuss the beauty and power of art and creativity and peacemaking and find ways to carry that out into our wider community that is very heavily influenced by art and murals already. If you've never had the chance to be involved in a mural project, it's pretty amazing and I want to use it as a way to cultivate stronger bonds and empower the creativity in everyone to make us all better peacemakers. I need the $500 to buy all the eco-friendly paint and brushes and maybe a few ingredients for making some spectacular food together that I will get all from the local farmer's market and co-op market.

I'm curating a TEDx event for my local area to stimulate more big thinking in the students around me and urge them to start thinking about what our role is going to be in our future as we begin to replace our current leaders.

One of the talks will be by a group of students from my school who built an effective cooling system which can be deployed in Haiti and Africa to better the health and improve the comfort of the people living in huts by using solar power -- and get this: it can built from tupperware, aluminum foil, and easily obtainable materials for under $150. And this is a group of students.

But I'm going to put a little spin on the event; I am going to invite the audience, the students, to form groups, brainstorm, and collaborate on ideas during breaks.

I want to show the students around me that they are so capable of making an impact, and through each other, they are empowered. They need to experience the high of ideas.

But I'm going to take it one step further and give the audience the opportunity to join me and anyone else to actually pursue an initiative, together. I will use this money to fund the group's pursuit.

I already started working on my idea. It has brought so many people together already and i have already set the event date and have cofirmed guest coming. I started a small Bike club in Eagle rock and already have about 80 people coming there a month. I could use this funding to bu some trees and pay for the water bill for the water i've been using from the neighbors. The Kids are loving it and it's keeping them off the streets and doing something productive that they can do all their life.

Hi! I intend to create a snuggle party in Orange County. This is the most powerful, deeply connecting, and fun party and playshop I've ever been to! It's a place where people get their voice back, learn how to own their yes and their No, set boundaries, learn how to connect and be intimate respectfully, make requests without fear of rejection, ask for what they really want. And all touch is consensual. One must ask for permission first at all time. And one must get a verbal Yes or NO before proceeding. No Maybes allowed. If it's a No, they teach you how to respond to that gracefully and respectfully by saying: "Thank you for taking care of yourself." Thus, it is no longer about me nor do I feel rejected since they are just taking care of themselves! It has nothing to do with my self-worth! This is a powerful, fun, transformative party usually done in someone's home. Now, usually I have to drive all the way to San Diego, which is 90 minutes away. That's why I wanna bring it to my community!

I plan to organize unemployed persons in my community to create a platform of mutual aid and self help. It weighs on me that the unemployed receive little to no attention from our various governments or in public discussion. My plan is to publicly invite unemployed persons to meet and discuss their situations. The invitation will promise no teaching, preaching, coaching, shaming or politics. A friend and I will conduct the meeting using the Appreciative Inquiry framework, The purpose is to help folks explore their situation collectively and discover ways to improve their lives with or without employment.

This $500.00 should be sufficient to fund the use of a meeting room and provide refreshments for four sessions. If this plan works, it could continue on its own momentum after that.

I do not have any result in mind from this exercise. The point is to help people reach their own solutions. My hope is to develop methods that can be used in other communities around the country.
